Dear Graduates, Students and Jobseekers,

Today I will share three hints with you which can help you to make a strong final impression which can make the difference against your competition.

One to use right at the end of the interview and two others immediately after the interview.

  1. Closing:

Many candidates do not “close” the job. With the closing I mean, that you reconfirm the interest in the job and show your enthusiasm for the job. Moreover, you ask what will happen next. Especially if you apply for a sales position this is a must.

With the closing question, you probably also will get a sense by when you can expect to hear the final decision.

If you get an answer like: “we will get back to you soon” try to understand what soon means. Are we talking here about a few days or a few weeks? Also, be curious to understand if they are evaluating other candidates or waiting to get the final confirmation on the budget to be able to hire the right candidate.

  2. Reflection:

For your own learning, immediately after the final interview, go to a nice coffee and review the interview and do a self-evaluation. Note down things you think you did well or got positive feedback on. Also, write down situations or questions where you felt uncomfortable or did not know what to say.

Were there any promises made? Was there anything you wanted to ask but did not have the chance? Do you still remember all the names and roles of the people you talked to and did they say any useful information? Is this the company you always wanted to work for? What excites you the most to get this job?

That information might be relevant for later and also helpful for the follow-up email you should consider to write to the hiring manager.

  3. Follow up with the hiring manager

It is a small gesture but 99% of the candidates are not doing it. You probably will need 10 minutes of your time to invest in it and really make a difference compared to the other 99%.

It does not need to be complex. Follow the KISS rule. Keep It Short and Simple

Here an example:

Hi [Interviewer Name],

It was a pleasure meeting you and thank you for explaining to me more about the position, your company and introducing me to the team.

I’m very excited about the opportunity to join your team. Especially because of the fact [insert the main reason why you are excited].

Please let me know if I can provide additional information.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,

[Your Name]

It is in your hand to stand out from the crowd with 2-3 little gestures and make the difference.

Happy closing?
